Luther Jerome Hatley, 89, of 709 Applewood Street, Kannapolis, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at Serenity House in Mooresville.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, December 5, at McGill Baptist Church in Concord, where he was a member. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM at the church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Ayers officiating. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Military rites will be performed by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Hatley was born March 23, 1920, in Cabarrus County to the late William E. Hatley and the late Lucy Russell Hatley. He was a veteran of the US Navy where he served as a Seaman Second Class. He was a retired weaver at Cannon Mills and a member of the Jolly Rogers of his church. He was also a member of the former Poplar Tent VFD, where he served as captain, and an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Pressley Hatley; daughter, Lucy Threatt; step-son, Jimmy Earl Atwell; brothers, Billy Paul Hatley, Walter Hatley, and Roy Lee Hatley; and sisters, Vida Weathers and Sadie Mason.
Survivors include step-son, Hugh Atwell and wife, Sherry, of Concord; step-daughter, Annette Roth of Spring Hill, FL; daughter-in-law, Mary Atwell of Concord; grandchildren, Cliff Atwell and wife, Lynne, Heather Wells, Angela Vazquez and husband, Luis, Scott Rockett, and Ashton Rockett; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Abigail and Evan Atwell, Lexie Wells, Ross Vazquez, and Michael, Skyla and Hunter Rockett.
