Mae McLean Atchley, 100, of Monroe, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2023.
Mae was born April 27, 1922 in Union County, Goose Creek Township to the late Charlie Oscar Linker and the late Beatrice Watson Linker.
She was also preceded in death by sons, Errol McLean and Charles McLean; and sister, Freida Stegall.
Mae is survived by her sons, David Freeman, John Kenneth McLean and Joel Thomas McLean and his wife Pamela; daughter-in-law, Barbara McLean; sister, Pearl Helms; as well as 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mae was the second of three girls to Charlie and Beatrice and graduated from Fairview High School where she was captain of the girl's basketball team. She later married and moved to Mobile, Alabama where she worked and later retired from the Mobile Public Library. Mae returned to Monroe after 50 years of living in Mobile. She was a life long member of Zion United Methodist Church in Monroe and spent many years as a volunteer for the VFW. Mae had a large family whom she cherished and was happiest when spending time with them. She was a lover of life and found joy in laughter and the simplest things. She will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Zion United Methodist Church. The graveside service will follow at 11:00 am at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1521 Old Fish Rd., Monroe, officiated by Rev. Norma Villagrana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion UMC, 1521 Old Fish Rd., Monroe, NC 28110.
