Margaret Porter

Margaret Louise Peoples Porter, 88, passed away March 9, 2013 at her home in Concord. Mrs. Porter was born February 11, 1925 in Mecklenburg County to the late James McDill Peoples and Mattie Cordelia Perry Peoples. She was also preceded in death by her siblings; Isabell Peoples, Rachael Peoples, James Peoples, Jr., Perry P. Ford, and Preston Peoples. Margaret graduated from Sharon School in Charlotte, attended Erskine College, Due West, S. C. and graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She was active in the Junior Charity League, First Presbyterian Women of the Church, Girl Scout leadership, and several family businesses. One of her favorite causes was the AFS for which she helped raise money by designing, sewing, and raffling colorful quilts. She chaperoned many girls on weeklong beach trips. Her attraction to small children was exceeded only by their attraction to her. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2013 at Oakwood Cemetery, 471 Church Street in Concord. The family will greet friends after the service. At other times, the family will meet at her home. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Crawford Alexander Porter, Sr., of the home; her son, Crawford “Alex” Porter, Jr. and his wife, Teresa of Concord; her daughters, Marilyn Porter of Concord, Cordelia Andrews and her husband, Greg, of Concord, and Cindy Porter of Richmond, VA; her grandchildren, Preston Porter, Alexandra Porter, Ford Koch, Porter Koch, Baylor Koch, Mary Margaret Andrews, Laura Andrews, and Rachael Andrews; and her sister, Emma Peoples Smith of Charlotte. The family would like to thank her devoted caregivers; Sandy Collins, Sue Rigot, Hoppy Mantooth, Della Faggart, and Cindy Miller. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Porter family.
