Mrs. Margaret Wright Black of Midland died Sunday, September 12, 2010 at her home. Funeral service is at 4:00 pm Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Reverend Mark Clontz officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 pm to 3:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home, prior to the service. Mrs. Black was born in Mills River, North Carolina on November 20, 1918, a daughter of Edward Bronson Wright and Margaret Evelyn McCarley Wright. She graduated as valedictorian from Mills River High School in 1936. Mrs. Black was a graduate of Brevard College in 1938 and Asheville Teacher’s College in 1940 with degrees in Music and Education. Her first position was with Mills River School as a music teacher. Mrs. Black was married to Stuart Jerome Black on June 15, 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Black both pursued teaching careers at Odell School prior to the outbreak of WWII. During the war, Mrs. Black accompanied Mr. Black on his assignments as a naval officer to locations around the country including Plattsburg, New York, Jacksonville, Florida and San Diego, California. Following the war, Mr. and Mrs. Black settled in Midland where Mr. Black and his partner started Black and Williams Implement Company and Mrs. Black taught in the Cabarrus County School system at Bethel Elementary School. She retired from teaching in 1979. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1960 and in 1978. Mrs. Black was a past president of United Methodist Women of Bethel United Methodist Church and a past member of the church choir. She served on the Board of Directors of Alumni Association of Brevard College. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Stuart Black, and is survived by a son, Stuart Jerome Black, Jr. and wife, Tina; a daughter Margaret Beth Love and husband, Alan; and five grandchildren. Memorials for Mrs. Black should be sent to Brevard College, Stuart and Margaret Black Music Scholarship Fund, 400 N.
