Marian Joan Talbott Schumacher, 83, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, died Monday, August 2, 2010 at The Gardens of Taylor Glen in Concord, North Carolina after several years of declining health. She lived in Concord, NC since 2002. Marian will always be remembered for her sense of humor, thoughtfulness toward others, friendliness, leadership abilities, and her attention to detail. She was devoted to her faith, her family, her many friends, and her community. Marian was born on May 13, 1927 in Winner, South Dakota and was the youngest of three children born to Clarence and Anna (Bury) Talbott. She majored in Business Administration at the University of Kentucky and helped put herself through school by tutoring the university's champion basketball team. She also attended the Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. Marian first worked as Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of Standard Oil. Two years later she worked at the American Bar Association where she was Director of Legislative Services and Director of the Exhibit Program before her promotion to the Administrative Assistant to the President. In this position, she was able to travel around the country and meet four U.S. presidents as well as the Shah of Iran. She married Arthur W. Schumacher Jr. on New Year’s Eve, 1956 in Chicago. They lived the majority of their married life in Glendale, Wisconsin. A long-time member of the Episcopal church, she especially enjoyed serving on the Altar Guild. She was also a long-time member of the Glendale Women's Club, serving as President (1980 to 1982) and on the Conservation group, Bylaws Committee, and as Parliamentary Advisor, in addition to other roles. She also spearheaded the Advertising Group and worked with the new library commission. Marian enjoyed her bowling league and book club. When her children were young, she was a girl scout leader and a cub scout den mother. Marian will always be remembered for her many interests such as dancing, travel, horseback riding, big band music, and the Kentucky Derby. She had a special passion for the written word and enjoyed many book clubs over the years. Known for her quick wit and a fast retort, she often had her friends in stitches before they knew what hit them! Marian is predeceased by her husband Arthur (1983), brother Marvin (2005), and sister Mildred (1948). She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kim (husband, Bob and children, Justin and Rebecca) Kinney of Kannapolis, NC and her son, Scott (wife, Sheila and son, Dane) Schumacher of Surrey, BC, Canada. Marian’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Taylor Glen for the loving and compassionate care they so patiently provided. Thank you for seeing who she was on the inside. Her family also deeply appreciates Marian’s amazing network of friends who continued to remember her by sending cards and gifts and visiting even when she could no longer remember them or reciprocate their kindness.
