Martin Carl Bormann

October 8, 1957 — March 30, 2025

Concord

Martin Carl Bormann, 67, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2025 at his home in Concord, NC.

Marty was born October 8, 1957 in Muskegon, Michigan to Irvin Otto Bormann and Shirley Ann Brooks.

He was also preceded in death by his father and mother, father-in-law Larry Dangerfield, brother-in-law Gene Dangerfield, sister-in-law Paula Dangerfield, and nieces Kore and Jamie Bormann.

Have you ever met someone who saw you in a way no one else did? How is it possible that a person can simultaneously touch your heart and your funny bone, while being inspirational and facetious, tirelessly improving your life, in small ways and large? Did you ever get a sense that nothing came easy for the person, but gratitude and positivity were abundant and complaints were few? Marty Bormann was that guy.

Marty grew up in Wabash, Indiana, the fourth born out of 10. Life in his household presented challenges and his mother’s love served as a balm. Marty’s three brothers and six sisters have always meant so much to him. He stayed in Wabash, helping his father with everything from capturing bats that made their way into his childhood home, to clearing a sewer clog, until his professional pursuits took him to North Carolina.

Recipient of a full scholarship to civil engineering school, Marty set off to college. Shortly into his time away from home, his heart took him back to Wabash to propose marriage to the love of his life, Tammy. She said, “yes,” and they set a date. Marty regained his high school job at Marsh’s Grocery Store, stocking, cleaning, and doing whatever needed to be done. Marty and Tammy were over the moon to be on their path to marriage.

On July 16, 1977, Marty and Tammy were married at Marty’s childhood parish, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. They got right to work establishing their home together, and welcomed Nicholas Paul, a month premature, in February 1978. Sara Elizabeth came along in December 1979, and Jennifer Ann in August 1982. Marty and Tammy had their hands full and it was their love that fed the family.

Marty was driven and wanted the best for his family. He pursued a general laborer job in 1977 at a local papermill, Container Corporation, and took every opportunity to learn and hone his skills. Marty took on new roles and responsibilities at the papermill while also taking chemistry courses, achieving a certification to operate large wastewater treatment plants.

In 1989, Marty began employment with BASF Corporation, serving in roles that would take him across the country and world. He and Tammy made the difficult decision to move to Concord in 1991, knowing it would open up new possibilities for their family. Marty was repeatedly promoted as others saw his potential as a creative problem solver, and effective manager of teams. He shouldered the weight of heavy responsibilities and did his level best to deliver.

During the Lenten season in 2009, Marty met Jesus in a new way, feeling His presence and support. It was a turning point for him, establishing new rituals in conversation with God and anchoring his day in reflection and gratitude. Tammy would often overhear Marty praying for the souls of loved ones out loud as he got ready for the day.

Marty retired December 13, 2017, after more than 29 years of service with BASF Corporation. His former colleague wrote an article about him upon retirement. Click here to read it. He gave his all - every. single. day. - and it was time for a break. He planned for a long retirement, building in provision for unexpected challenges and opportunities.

Road trip! Marty dreamt of hitting the road on his own terms. Behind the wheel of an RV, he drove across the country with Tammy. They saw the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, and so much more. They traveled for family events, weddings, funerals, and celebrations of all sorts. Their camping adventures evolved over time and took them to a magical place, Mountain Falls in Transylvania County, NC.

Marty was so taken with Mountain Falls that it was time to make it a home away from home. He and Tammy bought a spot to set up their motorcoach and began making friends and memories. For the first time in Marty’s life, he could slow down a bit and enjoy the beautiful mountain view and calming sounds of nature. He made fast friends with golfing buddies and adored taking the pups on golf cart rides.

What mattered most to Marty… quality time with family. Expressing his generosity and charitable compassion through taking in those in need and making anonymous donations. Living life to the fullest, having a great time enjoying music and experiences with family and friends.

When something needed to be done, Marty stepped up to the plate, regardless of how hard it might be. His heart of gold was so big, truly larger than life. On March 30th, 2025, Marty’s heart stopped working. His legacy lives on through his devoted wife, children, and grandchildren.

As he shared with his colleagues when he retired, “I wish all of you the best life has to offer, don’t let the time slip by without telling each other how much you appreciate each other. Remember the three greatest gifts that we are all born with, Faith, Hope and Love – the greatest of these is Love.”
