Marvin David Harwood, 89, retired farmer from the Mission community, passed away at the home of his son on September 3, 2011, after succumbing to cancer. Mr. Harwood was a lifelong farmer, raising grains, hay, eggs, and cattle with his son Gary. In recent years, Mr. Harwood and his wife Velma, sold produce at the Stanly County Farmer’s Market. Mr. Harwood was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army Air Corps while stationed in India. Mr. Harwood was a Christian and a member and former deacon of Mission Baptist Church in Locust, North Carolina. Marvin David Harwood was born December 14, 1921, to the late Eli Wiley Harwood and Bertha Hatley Harwood. Mr. Harwood is survived by his wife of 61 years, Velma Williams Harwood of the home. He is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Larry Harwood and Dottie Almen-Harwood of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Gary Harwood and Donna Watkins Harwood of Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. Mr. Harwood is also survived by six grandchildren; Hannah Harwood of Southborough, Massachusetts, Jordan Harwood of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, Theodore Harwood of Ithaca, New York, Elspeth Harwood of Springfield, Missouri, and Jenny and Teresa Harwood of Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. Additionally, Mr. Harwood is survived by one brother, Boyd Harwood of Charlotte; and two sisters, Rachel Warwick and Pina Nance, both of Charlotte; along with five nephews and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Sunday, September 4, at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. Funeral services and internment for the late Mr. Harwood will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mission Baptist Church with a 30 minute state. Pastor Ronny Russell will officiate. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Stanly County DAV Chapter 12. Memorials may be sent to the World Hunger Fund at Mission Baptist Church, 12444 Mission Church Road, Locust, NC 28097.
