Mary Mcmanus

Mrs. McManus, formerly of Midland, N.C., and a resident of the Carriage Club of Charlotte since the fall of 2007, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011. She was 91 years old. Born Jan. 11, 1920, in Albemarle, N.C., to the late Millard Fillmore Shankle and Elizabeth Burleson Shankle, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert Ussery McManus and three sisters, Agnes Shankle Almond and Peggy Shankle Smith of Albemarle and Onnie Mae Shankle Carpenter of Lake Wylie. She graduated from Albemarle High School in 1937, and she was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Midland. Margaret Shankle McManus is survived by her daughter Linda McManus Dowd and her husband, John Kenneth Dowd, Jr., and her son Robert Ussery McManus, Jr., and his wife Judy Blackwelder McManus all of Charlotte. Also surviving are her grandchildren Margaret Katherine Dowd, Mary Carole Dowd, Robert Ussery McManus III and his wife Natalie all of Charlotte, and Phillip Mark McManus and his wife Becky of Houma, La., and four great-grandchildren: Jacob, Benson and William McManus of Houma, La., and Lauren McManus of Charlotte. Also surviving her are Ryan and Shana White and their daughters, Lili and Ella, of Norfolk, Va., Margaret’s sister, Opal Shankle Whitlock of Lancaster, S.C., and many nieces and nephews. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Margaret was blessed with many talents and interests. She was a voracious reader, expert needle crafter and tireless gardener, and she showered her family and friends with her beautiful handiwork. Her family is deeply grateful for the loving care and tender ministrations of the director and staff of Carriage Club’s Assisted Living, all of whom helped provided a home with dignity and love. The family also is appreciative of Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte’s support. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. in the narthex of Bethel United Methodist Church prior to the 11 a.m. graveside service on Friday, May 6. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Bethel United Methodist Church, 12700 Idlebrook Road, Midland, N.C., 28107 or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland, is serving the McManus family.
