Mary Swanson

Mary Christine Jones Swanson, 65, of Locust, NC, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on May 6, 2019.  Christine was born on December 11, 1953 in Sylva, NC to James Leonard Jones, Sr. and Ethel Fox Jones. She was the youngest of eleven siblings.

Christine earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Western Carolina University and worked as an executive secretary at Dickerson Group, Inc. in Monroe, NC until she was involved in a near-fatal car accident on February 26, 1982, which left her paraplegic, although miraculously alive.  She proceeded to raise her son, Stephen, without ever allowing her wheelchair to slow her down. She loved to play the piano and omnichord and sing praises to her Lord and Saviour.  She served as church organist for many years and was involved in rest home ministry for over twenty years.  Christine also served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Leonard Jones, Sr. and Ethel Fox Jones, brothers Grover Jones, Alex Jones, and James Leonard Jones, Jr., and sisters Geneva Jones Humphrey, Helen Jones Wooten, and Annie Nell Jones Crowe.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Marvin L. Swanson of Locust, NC, her son Stephen M. Swanson and wife, Jennifer, of Albemarle, NC, and grandsons Aaron and Levi Swanson. She is also survived by her sisters Ruby Jones Cabe of Franklin, NC, Evelyn Jones Sheffield (Clark) of Sylva, NC, Mildred Jones Conner of Pisgah Forest, NC, and Bessie Jones Cogdill (Doyle) of Sylva, NC and their families.

Christine epitomized the characteristics attributed to the Proverbs 31 woman; she was a virtuous woman whose price was far above rubies. Strength and honor were her clothing, and she is now rejoicing in the time that has come. She always spoke with wisdom, and extended kindness, comfort, and encouragement to any and all who crossed her path. She poured herself into her family and delighted in her grandsons. She was a woman who served the Lord, and her sweet, loving, compassionate spirit was evidence of her relationship with her Father in heaven. She will be greatly missed, but she is now walking on streets of gold!

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10th, 2019 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th, 2019 at Providence Church of God in Locust, NC.
