It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin James Norwood, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and community member. He met Jesus on February 7th, 2025, at the age of 79.
Melvin was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served with honor during the Vietnam War. His dedication to service and country was unwavering, and he carried the values of discipline, integrity, and commitment throughout his life. After returning from service, Melvin followed a lifelong passion for cars, making a successful career in the automotive industry. He was known for his deep love of vehicles and the craftsmanship that went into making them run smoothly. Melvin was a jack of all trades and could fix or build anything and was meticulous in his work. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed the thrill of drag racing, where his competitive spirit and skill behind the wheel made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Melvin and his wife Marilyn were devoted members of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an Usher for 22 years. In addition, he contributed to the church community through many years of service in food services, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His love of family, passion for cars, and commitment to faith and service will be remembered fondly by friends, loved ones, and the many people whose lives were touched by his kindness and generosity.
Melvin is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughters Carrie(Berry) and Cyndi, bonus daughter Kelley(Jack), Grandchildren Brandon(Kelsey),Gary (Shawn), Destiny(Matthew), Timothy(Alexis), Jacob(Keniston), Christian, Joshua, and Alyssa, and three Great Grandchildren Carter, Brady, and Cooper who will remember him with love.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, located at 7200 E. W.T. Harris Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28215. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the same location. Burial will take place at Charlotte Memorial Gardens at 12:00 PM, located at 7632 Hood Rd, Charlotte, NC 28215.
May he rest in peace in the kingdom of heaven with those who have preceded him in this journey.
He will be truly missed and loved infinitely.
