Melvin Rodger Vanderburg, Sr., 93 of Concord, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at St. Andrews Living Center. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, 200 Branchview Drive, SE on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 2 pm following a 1 hour state, with Rev. Tom Anderson officiating. Graveside will be family only. Melvin was born on July 5, 1918, to the late John Francis Vanderburg and Annie Lee Stancil Vanderburg. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Rachel Mauney Vanderburg; and four brothers, Dock, Ray, Nathan and Hayden Vanderburg. Melvin was a 1936 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and a life time member of First Baptist Church. He served in US Navy during WWII, serving in the Deep Sea Diving Division and spending 17 months in the Northern African arena. He worked for Johnson’s Furniture Store and later opened his own store, K-Town Furniture, Inc. in 1967. Melvin was instrumental in starting the Cabarrus County Rescue Squad. He served as an original member of the 1948 Advisory Board of The Boy’s Club and was a lifetime honorary member of the Board of Directors. He is survived by sons, Rodger (Stacy) Vanderburg and Garry (Vicki) Vanderburg all of Concord; daughter, Tonda (Marty) Corso of Clifton, VA; grandchildren, Heath Corso, of Oakridge, NC, Brandon, Jason, and Alec Corso of VA, Tres Vanderburg of Charlotte, Emily, Ginny, and Will Vanderburg of Concord, Dawn Lockavitch and Tonda Vanderburg both of Concord; and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Isabelle Helms of Concord, Mary Frances Hasty of Charlotte; brother, Jack Vanderburg of Greensboro.
