Melvin J. Yates, 90, of Concord, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 14, 2012, at CMC Northeast. Mr. Yates was born in Cabarrus County, Nov., 19, 1921, to the late Julius Yates and the late Cora Carter Yates. In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by brothers Griffin, Homer and Clifford and sisters Ethel, Fannie, Kathleen & Savannah. Melvin is survived by his wife, Gertrude Lefler Yates of 70 years, one daughter Pat Holland (Vance), 3 grandchildren, Tonda Smith (Jeff), Chris Holland (Tina) and Dee Jewell (Randy), 7 great grandchildren, Brad Smith (Megan), Ben Smith (Shelby), Hunter, Brett, Matt Holland, Adam & Katie Jewell and one great-great grandchild Zoey Smith. (This was five generations). He is also survived by one brother Bud Yates. Melvin worked in Cannon Mills for over 40 years and after he retired he worked at Lee's Laundromat and the What-A-Burger for about 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1943 to 1945 and received two purple hearts. When Melvin's health was good, he loved to participate in the Senior Games and also participated in the Senior Olympics in Raleigh. He won over 120 medals (most of which were gold medals). He was really proud of these medals. Melvin and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for many, many years. They regularly visited the nursing homes and shut-ins. He was a member of Westford United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was very involved in his Church during his lifetime. In earlier years he was an usher, on the Homecoming Committee, and served on other various committees. He dearly loved the Senior meetings which were once a month at Westford. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 17 at 11:00am at Westford United Methodist Church in Concorrd by Rev. Jeffrey Rushing. Burial will be at West Concord Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 16 from 6 to 8:00 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. Mr. Yates loved his family dearly and was a friend to all. He was a wonderful Husband, Daddy & Papa. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. The family will be at the home of his daughter Pat Holland.
