Michael Gordon Berg

December 4, 1952 — March 1, 2025

Concord

On Saturday, March 1st, Michael (Mike) Gordon Berg left us halfway through planting a tree in his yard, after a day spent with his granddaughters Wendy and Sylvie, in the first glimpse of spring after a harsh winter. On any given Saturday that's where he would have been; digging ditches, cutting grass, laying down stone, helping one of his children with a home improvement, or lending a hand to a neighbor.

Mike was born on December 4, 1952, in Oakland, California. He was the son of Gordon Gilbert Berg and Mary Jane Giles. Mike graduated from Amador County High School, California and his first job was in forestry. A man of many skills, he has worked as a business owner pouring cement/hardscaping, a firemedic in Santa Cruz, a welder, and so much more. He concluded his career as a highly admired electromechanical technician.

He was also known for being a highly skilled industrial mechanic who could fix anything. Having tireless energy at work and at home to maintain and meticulously care for his work projects, home responsibilities, and his many vehicles, Mike was a man who would stop what he was doing to help family, friends, and coworkers with anything they needed. He didn’t do kindness for recognition, but because that’s just who he was. You could be a stranger, a neighbor, or someone he hadn’t seen in years, but if you needed a hand, he was already rolling up his sleeves before you could even ask.

Mike Berg was a beloved husband, father, and “Grandpa,” and he will be deeply missed by his wife of 37 years, Carlene Berg, his son Cameron Berg with wife Nichole Gegelman, his son Brandon Berg with wife Julianna Sosa along with their daughters Wendy Berg and Sylvie Berg, and his beloved cats Margaery, Sophie, and Kathy. He was preceded in death by parents Gordon Gilbert Berg and Mary Jane Giles, and sisters Linda, Debbie, and Terri.

In addition to his immediate family, Mike Berg leaves behind sister Dina Donat along with her husband John and their children Lisa, Jodi, and Jessica, cousins Sandy and Melodie, and second-cousins Tiffanie and Kyle. Additional family includes aunt-in-law Patricia Cotter, sister-in-law Laurel Martin with husband, and brothers-in-law Steve, Ken, and Keith Brizzi with their respective wives.

He also leaves behind close friends Steve Hartung, Sean Thomas, John Galli, and O’Brien and Frankie along with the rest of the team at Chiron.

The physical hole left during his passing from the unfinished tree planting served as a tangible symbol of the profound loss we experienced. It mirrored the void he created within our family.

We are sustained by the belief that his unwavering dedication to family will endure through us all. The act of his sons filling the hole and planting the tree after his passing offered a powerful metaphor: his legacy will continue to thrive in their lives and the lives of his grandchildren.

Rest in Peace, Mike.
