Michael Hatley, Sr

Michael Lee Hatley, Sr. 66 years of age, of Locust, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home. Michael was born December 17, 1947 in Albemarle to Milas Ira Hatley and the late Zona Bell Barbee Hatley. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Ray Kennedy. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Locust Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the church sanctuary with Rev. Ed Higgins of West View Baptist Church in Sanford, FL and Rev. Doug Van Niel officiating. At other times the family will gather at the home. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley Rhea Medlin Hatley of the home; sons, Michael Lee Hatley, Jr. and wife Amber of Locust, and Phillip Byron Hatley and wife Courtney of Locust; four grandchildren, Zoee, Grayden, Tulah, and Averie; and sister, Pattie Kennedy White of Locust. Michael was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He attended UNC-Charlotte and worked as a machinist for B & E Manufacturing and Stainless Valve Company in Monroe. He was a volunteer fireman for 25 years with Locust Fire Department, and previously served as president of the Three Oaks Hunt Club. Michael served as an Elder at Locust Presbyterian Church, where he was a faithful member. It was his desire that all adults have annual vision exams due to his fight with ocular melanoma.
