Mildred Carter

March 6, 1928 — August 28, 2016

Mildred "Millie" Kyzer Carter died Sunday, August 28, 2016, in Raleigh, NC, at the age of 88. Millie was born in Hamlet, NC, on March 6, 1928, to Malcolm and Ida Kyzer. The Kyzer's were charter members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet. Millie graduated from Hamlet High school in 1946, The Woman's College of The University of North Carolina in 1950, and later completed her Master's degree at Appalachian State Teacher's College.

Teaching brought Millie to Stanly County after college. Albemarle became home upon meeting her husband, Jacob "Jake" Marvin Carter. They were married in 1953. Jake and Millie were prominent figures in education in the Stanly County and Albemarle City Schools. Millie taught business education in all 4 of the county's high schools. She taught the first computer class at Albemarle Senior High School. Her daughters always enjoy running into Millie's many former students. She retired in 1984, after 30 years in education. Jake preceded Millie in death in 1983, following a long illness with multiple sclerosis.

Anyone that came into contact with Millie will tell you that her joy in life was her church. Millie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Albemarle for over 60 years. Church life and its operations were front and center with Millie. Into her 80's, Millie kept regular office hours in the church office putting all those years of business education into practice. She served and represented her church in more ways than can ever be documented. In addition to her work in the church office she was a member of church council for numerous years, handbell and chancel choir member, lay leader, Sunday school teacher, English as a second language teacher and the list goes on. She served the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, locally as president and on the state level as Vice President and board member. She was a delegate to the national WELCA convention on a number of occasions.

After retiring from education, Millie joined the Stanly County Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered faithfully for 38 years

Millie loved to travel. Visiting her daughters in various parts of the country and world as well as road trips with her sister, "Boots", and Boots' late husband, David. Mission work took her to Mexico twice where she built hay bale homes. At the age of 70, Millie traveled to Malaysia on a mission trip with the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. A part of that trip included sleeping in the jungle.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 4, 2016 at First Lutheran Church of Albemarle. A funeral service will be held in the church sanctuary at 3:00 PM officiated by Rev. Ruth Ann Sipe. Burial will follow in Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.
