Newell Sorenson

Newell “Doc” Robert Sorenson, age 86 of Albemarle, passed away on September 15, 2011 at Stanly Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends at First Lutheran Church of Albemarle on Sunday, September 18 from 1pm until 2pm. At other times the family will meet at the home of his granddaughter, Angela, 20721 Hwy 138, Albemarle. The funeral service will follow at 2pm, officiated by Rev. John Futterer. Burial will be Monday, September 19, at the Salisbury National Cemetery with military rites at 11am. Mr. Sorenson was born in Harrison Township, PA on May 27, 1925, to the late Newell Thomas Sorenson and the late Katherine Maxwell Sorenson. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ruth Lees Sorenson, of the home; sons, Tom Sorenson and wife Kathy of Conneaut, OH, Bob Sorenson and wife Billie of Westerville, OH, Clyde Sorenson and wife Leeann of Clayton, NC, Bill Sorenson and wife Margaret of Norwood, NC, Warren Sorenson and wife Katrina of Cleveland, NC; brother, Merle Sorenson of Buffalo, NY; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Sorenson proudly served his country in the US Army as an operating room specialist and a combat medic. He retired from the Army with life time memberships in 35th Division Assn., Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets and Disabled American Veterans. His military career spanned from serving in France in WWII to serving in Vietnam. Memorials may be made to the VFW, 119 Anderson Road, Albemarle, NC 28001.
