Olive Rooney

Olive Rooney died, Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Long Island Jewish Hospital, New York. She had been suffering from liver cancer. Born Mary Olive St. John in County Roscommon, Ireland, she received her schooling in Ireland and worked there for several years before she married John M. Rooney in 1950. They lived in Ireland and New Jersey where he worked for Federal Pacific Electric Company. They moved to Stanly County in 1966. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978. Her oldest son, John, Jr. of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, died last year. She is survived by two sons, David of Fresh Meadows, New York and Robert of Woodbridge, Va.; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Rooney was very active in her church, Annunciation Catholic in Albemarle where she served as secretary for many years. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. There will be a funeral mass on Saturday, July 11 at 1:00 PM at Annunciation Catholic Church. Father Peter Fitzgibbons will officiate. Burial will be at Stanly Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 416 N. Second Street, Albemarle, NC 28001, in her memory.
