Oscar Shelton

Oscar Lee Shelton, 79 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at Carolinas HealthCare System Stanly in Albemarle.

Oscar was born August 5, 1937 in Guilford County to the late Robert Abner Shelton and the late Nellie Roach Shelton. He was also preceded in death by his son, Joseph Shelton, in 2011.

The funeral service will be on Monday, May 1, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Canton Baptist Church in Albemarle officiated by Rev. Mark Mabry. Burial will follow at the church Cemetery at 24615 Endy Road, Albemarle. Full military honors will be conducted by the Stanly County DAV. The family will receive friends after the burial in the church fellowship hall.

The body will lie in state at Hartsell Funeral Home from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Sunday, April 30, 2017, where friends are welcome to come by and pay their respects if unable to attend the funeral service on Monday.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years , Elizabeth Braxton Shelton of Albemarle; son, Steve (Karla) Shelton, MD, of Columbia, SC; son, Stan (Amy) Shelton of New London; sister, Marjorie Cook; grandchildren, Kathryn, Lee,Tucker, Grayson, Reese, and Camille Shelton.

A graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy and Wake Forest University, Oscar is a US Air Force veteran. An avid baseball and basketball player in his youth, he was very outgoing and loved all sports. Oscar was founder and owner of Shelton Insurance.
