Pearl Frances Coggin

Ruth Plowman Burris Coggin, 97, of Albemarle, passed away March 29, 2022, at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center in Albemarle.

She was born June 19, 1924 to the late Archie Dean Plowman and Mamie Hahn Plowman. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Agnes Almond and Katherine Rodgers; and brothers, A.D., Martin, Oliver, Donald, and Leroy Plowman.

Ruth graduated from New London School in 1943. She married to Craven Burris July 8, 1948 in which they were married for 24 years until his passing in 1972. Ruth then married her second husband, Raymond Coggin in December 1976. They were together for 14 years until his passing in 1990.

Ruth had a fulfilling life and did many things, she visited all 50 states and went overseas six times enjoying the Holy Land the most. She worked at Wiscasset Mills for 44 years, retiring in 1987. Growing up, Ruth always wanted to be a nurse and in a way she fulfilled her dream by looking after her husband's mother and her mother. Ruth then began volunteering more, she said her volunteering began in 1942 when she got her license and picked up a family who she took to church. She volunteered for Hospice and had many patients in the 20 some years she was with them. Ruth also worked as a loyal member of the Hospice Angels. She called Bingo once a month at Stanly Manor for 20 years where she enjoyed being with the residents. Ruth also volunteered at the Senior Center, Clothing Closet and delivering meals to the home bound.

She was a loyal active member of First Baptist Church of New London since 1948, worked with Sunbeams for 20 years, was Church Treasurer for 21 years, sang in the choir and served on the Church Hostess Committee as long as she was able. Ruth has perfect attendance in Sunday School and went to West Andes for a fourteen day mission trip.

Ruth rode a cherry picker at the age of 84, going up 75ft to see all over New London. She rode a slide at Bakers Shoe Store at 81 where she gained the record for being the oldest to ride.

There wasn't many things that Ruth wouldn't do, she loved to have parties and meals at her home where everyone was welcome. She was given a 90th birthday party on a Saturday by her niece's and 50 people attended, including Elvis. The next day, two more nieces gave her another party were 190 people attended. Ruth loved being with people, whether it was on a tour bus or playing Bingo somewhere. She was Blessed with a good life, family and friends including special nephew, Danny Plowman, that loved and cared for her. Ruth was best described by the sign on her car, "Go Go Girl Ruth".

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM, Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00PM, Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle in the Lefler Memorial Chapel, officiated by Rev. Kinney Wallace, with music to be sung by a dear friend, Keith Byrd. Burial will follow at the New London Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly and the Uwharrie.
