October 24, 2020 was a day of both sorrow and joy for the family, friends and caregivers of Rachel Maxine Eudy Chandler. Sorrow in that she has physically left her earthly family and friends behind, and joy in that she is free of her suffering and went to be with her Lord and Savior. She lived her life as an obedient and faithful servant who knew with whom and where she would spend eternity.
A graveside service to celebrate her life will be on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Stanly Gardens of Memory, in Albemarle, NC.
Rachel was born on September 29, 1928 in the Endy community of Stanly County, NC to the late Lester D. and Gertie Clark Eudy. She married Wilborn “Shorty” Chandler on March 15, 1947, and he preceded her in death on January 25, 1994. She is survived by their only daughter, Bonnie Chandler Richardson and her husband, Pete of Kernersville, NC. She was Gran to her 2 grandsons, Daniel Richardson (Mary) of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Sam Richardson (Maggie) of Asheville, NC and Gran-Gran to 2 great-granddaughters, Adelle and Heidi Richardson. Also surviving are her sister, Jeanette (Edward) Whitley and two nephews, Alan (Malea) and David Whitley.
Rachel worked for 37 years as a Librarian in both the YMCA and the Stanly County Library. She became the “Bookmobile Lady” in 1970, and when she retired in 1993, the county also retired the Bookmobile. She always enjoyed serving her library patrons, and loved seeing them in the community after she retired. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and then First Baptist Church in Albemarle. She loved music ministry and used her gift by playing the piano, singing in the Sanctuary Choir for 46 years, and playing in the Handbell Choir. She loved making wind chimes for her friends, working in her yard, designing and sewing, writing stories of her childhood and gathering genealogical photos and facts. Her love of designing and inventing (she designed and drew the blueprints for the home they built in 1966) was passed on to her grandson, Daniel. Her exceptional taste and appreciation in music, and her love of performing music lives on in her grandson, Sam. She was truly a woman of “The Greatest Generation” who loved God, her family and community.
Her family wishes to thank First Baptist Church for their ministry to her when she could no longer attend, to Taylor House, her home and family for 5 years, and her Walnut Ridge Assisted Living Horizons Community family for their love and care for the past 3 1/2years. They would also like to extend their appreciation and thanks to her doctors and nurses at Kernersville Medical Center and Trellis Supportive Care of Winston-Salem.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Albemarle Music Ministry, 202 North 2nd St. Albemarle, NC 28001
Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the family.
