Richard Bennick

Mr. Richard "Barry" Bennick, 70, of 3204 Perry Street, Concord, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2010, at Avante of Concord. He was born on July 18, 1939, in Cabarrus County to the late Walter Richard "Pete" Bennick and the late Helen Weaver Bennick. He was also preceeded in death by a brother, Charlie Bennick. Mr. Bennick was a veteran of the US Navy. Having joined the Navy when he was only 14 years old he was sent home when his age was discovered, only to return and join again at age 17. He was a retired police officer with the Mecklenburg County. After completing training and receiving a patrol car the department discovered he did not have a drivers license and had to send him to get one. Barry loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed living in Cherry Grove and loved anything to do with the beach. He also enjoyed listening to Southern Gospel music. Hw was of the Baptist faith. The family meeting place will be the home. Mr. Bennick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis A. Bennick of the home; son, Keith Bennick of Gastonia; daughters, Debbie Triming and husband Colin of Concord, Karen Calhoun and husband Darrell of Salisbury and Shelia Bennick of Concord; brother Johnny Bennick and wife Lois of Cherry Grove; grandchildren, Amy, Justin, Dylan, Devin, Nick and Sydney; great-grandchildren, Lorelei and Harper. A visitation will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord, on Monday, February 22, 2010, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at 2:00pm conducted by Rev. Robert Leonard. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Cooperative Christian Ministry, PO Box 1717, Concord, NC 28026-1717. Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord is serving the Bennick family.
