Richard “Dick†Walter Mills, of New London, died Saturday March 30, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center North East. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Jim Yow and Rev. Leslie Wray, will be held at Central United Methodist Church of Albemarle on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 11:00 am. He will lie in state 30 minute prior to the service. Private burial will follow at a later date. Mr. Mills was born on February 7, 1917 in Montgomery County to the late Jack and Ida Mills; he grew up in the Pee Dee and Morrow Mountain area. He married Mavis Ramelle Burris September 21, 1940. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2005. Dick was a kind and gentle man. He was always very appreciative of any kindness anyone did for him. He loved traveling to the Charleston area with his daughter and her husband. He loved collecting antiques, old cars and going to the CARE Café. Mr. Mills worked as an auto body repair man, owning Mills Body Shop. During WWII he and his wife lived in Wilmington for 7 years while he worked in the shipyard. He is survived by one child, his daughter Linda Mills Sample and her husband Mark.
