Robert William Maness, age 90 of 16251 US 52 S, Norwood, NC, passed away on December 12, 2010 at the Lutheran Home in Albemarle. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle on Tuesday, from 1:00 to 2:00. At other times the family will be at the home of his daughter, Shirley, 20547 US 52 S., Albemarle. The funeral service will be in Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lelfer Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, at 2:00 PM. Rev. Gene Moore will officiate and burial will be in Simpson Cemetery, Albemarle. Military honors will be conducted by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Born in Anson County on January 29, 1920, he was a son of the late Cassie Binder Maness and the late Hettie Rose Lineberry Maness. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Eunice Ferol Mabry Maness; daughter, Doris Maness Herrin; a granddaughter, Angela Dawn Herrin; brothers, Rev. Charlie Maness, J.W. Maness; and Hugh Glenn Maness; and sisters, Vera M. Burris, Mary Alice Harrington, and Betty Lou Baker. A member of Porter United Methodist Church, Norwood, he was a retired fork lift operator for Alcoa and a lifetime member of VFW Post # 6218. All four brothers served in World War II. He served on the SS Moremacswan, SS Coble Hill and SS Hunter Victory. He received medals and awards for serving in the American area, European-African Middle East area, and Asiatic-Pacific area. While serving in Okinawa, his ship was one of eighteen in a convoy when a typhoon struck. His ship ran full force into the wind all night. Next morning his ship was one of the three that remained afloat. All the others sank or washed ashore. He is survived by daughters; Shirley M. Smith and husband Richard Larry of Albemarle, and Donna M. Burris and husband Rick of Norwood; son in law, Eugene Herrin of Oakboro; sister in law, Lois Maness of Wadesboro; 7 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
