Robert Harry Moderow, 84, died Saturday, October 29, 2016 at his residence at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury following a brief battle with cancer.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Kathryn (Lorch) Moderow; his daughter Lynn (Medhat) Takla; his son Kevin (Angela) Moderow, his sister Ruth (late Herman) Moore; grandchildren Andrew, Jack and Julia Takla, Ryan and Erin Moderow; numerous nieces and nephews; many close friends; and his canine companion Lady ‘B’. Robert, ‘Bob’, was born in Chicago, Illinois to Ernest C. and Elisabeth E. (Frey) Moderow on January 14, 1932. He grew up on the south side of Chicago, just blocks away from Comiskey Park, where he developed a lifelong love of the Chicago White Sox. After graduating from Tilden Technical High School he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served as a radio operator during the Korean War. He returned home and was employed by Illinois Tool Works where he met the love of his life, Kathryn. Together they enjoyed raising their 2 children and several Siberian huskies, cheering on the White Sox, fishing trips to Wisconsin and Minnesota, gin martinis, traveling with friends and family, and welcoming each of their five grandchildren. Bob was a talented handyman around the house, a shutterbug, an amateur radio enthusiast, and an early adopter of personal computers for home use. While at ITW and later at Gleason and Pfauter Maag Cutting Tools he worked as Training Manager for the ‘Gear School’ conducting seminars dealing with basics of gear theory, production and inspection and authoring numerous books and articles on gearing subjects. He was active as a volunteer for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Glenview, Illinois; Cabarrus Meals on Wheels; and the Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church of Concord.
