Rommie James Austin, 86, of 411 S. 4th Street, Apt. 5B, Albemarle, NC passed away on June 13 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, June 14 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The graveside service will be held at 4 PM on Wednesday, June 15 at Aquadale Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Joe Smith will officiate the services. Military honors will be conducted by Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12. Mr. Austin was born in Stanly County on April 9, 1925 to the late John Clarence Austin and the late Minnie Mauldin Austin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Poplin Austin in 2003. He is survived by sons, Robin R. Austin of Albemarle, Douglas Austin of Aquadale; daughters, Sandra Lambert of Albemarle, Linda Poplin of Aquadale; sister, Mary Ruth Crisco of Albemarle; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Austin served in the US Army, 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment attached to the 82nd Airborne during the European Campaign. He served in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. He was a past deacon at West Oakboro Baptist Church. He was a vault cashier for Wells Fargo Armor Service.
