Rosa Irene Huneycutt Whitley 90, of 24465 Half Mile Road, Albemarle, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at her home. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle on June 5, Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. At other times the family will meet at the home. A funeral service celebrating the life of Mrs. Whitley will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with a 30 minute state on Monday June 6, at 6 p.m. Dr. Wayne Bennett and Dr. Phillip Hunter will officiate. A service of committal will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Whitley was a graduate of Millingport High School and Louise Harkey School of Nursing in 1945, among the first nursing class of 10 graduates. A registered nurse, she devoted herself to the care of others. She retired as nursing supervisor from Stanly Regional Hospital after serving 32 years. A nurturing mother and loving grandmother, she delighted in sharing southern hospitality with her family and many friends. She was active in the ministry of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, volunteering on mission trips, and lived her faith. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Cynthia and Rickey Furr of Albemarle; granddaughter, Candace and husband, Per Jonas Holmlund of Morehead City; grandson David Morris Furr of Indian Trail; and great grandchildren, Oskar Anders Holmlund and Charlie Jonas Holmlund. She is survived by two brothers, Melvin K. Huneycutt and Keith (Bob) Huneycutt. Mrs. Whitley was born September 17, 1920, daughter of the late Rufus E. Huneycutt and the late Ellen Bowers Huneycutt. She was preceded in death by her husbands Walter B. Childers; Cletus E. Whitley; sisters Lillie Vanhoy, Trula Hall, Edna Beaver; brothers Gilbert Huneycutt, Alphus Huneycutt, R.E. Huneycutt, D.C. Huneycutt, James Huneycutt. Memorials may be mailed to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 18523 Newsome Road, Oakboro, NC 28129.
