Roy James Almond, age 71, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011, at CMC- Northeast in Concord after a long 8 year battle with cancer. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 2, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. The funeral service will be on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Locust with a 30 minute state prior to the service. Dr. Kinney Wallace, Rev. Bob Gruver and Rev. George Mullen will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will meet at his home. Born August 10, 1940, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Buford James Almond and Louise Hinson Almond. He was a volunteer for the Locust Fire Dept. for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church for 45 years. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church, served on the pulpit committee, was the RA leader, a Sunday School Teacher, an usher and a Gideon for many years. He was a master machinist all his life. He was a licensed gunsmith; hand-built several guns and handcrafted many knives. He worked as a machinist at Schrader Automotive in Monroe for 15 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed greatly. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marjo Beatty Almond, of the home; two sons, Troy Almond and Caren Gober, of Mint Hill, and Tony Almond and wife, Freda, of Locust; six grandchildren, Amanda Almond and Matt Jordan, Alana, James, Tony II, Katie Almond and Hayley Page; and one great grandchild, Riley Almond; one brother, Cecil Almond, of Locust; and two sisters, Lynn Austin and husband Dale, of Locust, and Kamela Efird and husband Dennis of Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Locust, Building Fund, PO Box 159, Locust, NC 28097. Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland is serving the family.
