Roy Kenneth Currie, 70, of Charlotte, NC went to be with the Lord Saturday, September 2, 2017.
Roy was born December 15, 1946 in Lenoir, NC to Melba Jean Haynes Currie of Charlotte and the late Lawrence Ellis Currie, Sr.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Gerri Alene Vest Currie of Charlotte; son, James Lawrence Currie (Angel) of Concord; daughters, Melanie Alene Currie Stone (Rev. Darin) of Greensboro, Kate Elizabeth Currie Sweatt (Matthew) of Winston-Salem; brothers, Larry Ellis Currie (Fran), Gregory Philip Currie (Ann); grandchildren, Aidan Kenneth Currie, Taylor Marie Currie, Sarah Anne Stone, Luke William Stone, and Ryan Currie Stone; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Roy graduated from Harding University High School and attended UNC-Charlotte. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force, where he served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. Professionally, Roy was respected around the Charlotte Real Estate Market and was seen as a “visionary” amongst his peers during his 25+ years with the Charlotte Association of Realtors. After leaving the Association he became a small business owner working in insurance and enjoyed the independence as well as the friendships he developed, until his retirement. Personally, Roy enjoyed serving others in whatever role he was able. He served as Deacon, Elder, Treasurer, and as a member of the Pastor Search Committee at Back Creek Presbyterian Church. His love of soccer, and organizing chaos, led him through nearly 15 challenging years as a volunteer in AYSO soccer, where he began as coach. He later achieved the level of National Referee and Certified Referee Instructor. He also enjoyed cooking for family, pier fishing, and reading. Roy was always there to offer his wisdom as his children moved on into their lives and into their careers, always reminding them just how important they were to him and their mom. He never said no when they needed him. Roy's greatest achievements in life were being a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend, and provider.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the "Angels" at Universal Healthcare in Concord, especially Nurse Margaret Gerard, for their compassionate care over the course of his illness. Also, thank you to Hartsell Funeral Home for handling all of the arrangements.
The family will receive friends from 11:30am to 12:30pm on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Back Creek Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in the Family Life Center. The funeral service will follow at 1:00pm, officiated by Rev. Matt Carr and Rev. Wayne Frazier. Also, military honors will be conducted by the NC National Guard Honor Guard.
