Roy Townsend Sr

Roy Leonard Townsend Sr., 95 years of age, of Sherrills Ford, NC passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Autumn Care of Cornelius, NC

Roy was born January 16, 1922 in Shulls Mills, North Carolina to the late Arthur Monroe and Essie Pearl White Townsend.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Freda Mullins Townsend, his brothers Howard, Earl, Paul, Jim, and his sisters Juanita Harmon and Mayme Dotson.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm -2:30 pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg. The funeral service will be at 2:30 pm with Reverend Jim Sample and Reverend Charles Efird officiating. Burial will follow at the Harrisburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Harrisburg, NC.

Roy was a proud World War II Veteran, served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) at the age 18, was a member of The Army Air Observation Corp, named Cabarrus County Conservation Farmer of the Year, a Charter Member of the Harrisburg Lions Club where he served as president for multiple years and was also a founding member of the Harriburg Volunteer Fire Department. He also served in the Harrisburg Piedmont Area Development Association for many years.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Ramseur (Glenn), Norma Morris (Larry), Audrey Woodliff (Claude), Judy Hill (Will), Kathy Britt (Tevis), "imported daughter " Jo Vooght, son Roy "Butch" Townsend, Jr. (Beth), 13 grandchildren, Mark, David, Stephanie, Joanna, Angela, Claudia, Timothy, Scot, Kristie, Whitney, Jarrod, Chloe and Katie, 19 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, brothers Edward and Ken, sisters, Sarah Baumann and Pat Powell.

Memorials may be made to North Carolina Lions Camp Dogwood, 7062 Camp Dogwood Drive, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673 or Sherrills Ford/Terrell Rotary Club for their support of the Veterans Honor Flight Program at 4011 Slanting Bridge Rd., Sherrills Ford NC 28673.
