Roy Blaine Waddell, Jr., 86, of Concord, NC passed away Monday, July 31, 2017 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC.
Roy was born October 27, 1930 in Grayson County, VA to the late Roy Blaine Waddell, Sr. and the late Susan Maggie Miller Waddell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Frances Leonard; brothers, Ralph and Carl Waddell; son-in-law, Larry Griffin.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord, NC. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be at 11:00 am on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Roberta United Methodist Church, 3925 Cochran Rd., Concord, NC, officiated by Pastor Jim Church. He will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The burial will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Cabarrus County Honor Guard and the NC National Guard Honor Guard. At other times, the family will be gathering at the home.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Edith Gray Dillman Waddell of the home; son, Michael Waddell and wife Debbie of Newport News, VA; daughters, Patricia Clifton and husband Jerry of Sarasota, FL, Carla Griffin and fiancé Jim Thomas of Salisbury, NC; grandchildren, Jason Waddell and wife Heather, Kelly Waddell and wife Whitney, Robert Clifton and wife Robin, Lisa Clifton Philbrook, Regis Meloy and wife Kim; great-grandchildren, Bradyn, Taytum, Camdyn, Rhyker, Harper, Graeme, Taylor and Haylie, Grayson, Griffin, Jay, and Britton; sister, Shirley Storie and husband Paul of Fredericksburg, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He honorably served his county during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He retired from Virginia Power in Yorktown, VA as an Electrical Instrumentation Technician. Roy was an avid music lover his whole life. He loved playing the 5-string banjo and singing bluegrass gospel music. Roy was strong in his Christian faith. He lived his life by the word of God and set an example for his family.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses for all of their compassionate care. They would also like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Jim Church and their church family at Roberta United Methodist Church for their love and support.
