Ruth Summers Chapman, age 85 of 212 S. Main, Mt. Gilead, NC 27306, went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 22, 2009 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. Born in Glasgow, Kentucky October 24 1923 to the late Paul and Louise Jones, she was one of the 5 “Jones Girls”. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Loren Max Chapman, Sr. who died in 1992. Ruth joined the US Navy Waves in 1943 and served in Washington, D.C. for the remainder of WW II. She and Loren were married on June 7, 1944 in Rockville, MD. Three days later, Loren was sent to Europe where he served in General George Patton’s Third Army and fought through the Battle of the Bulge and then the fall of Germany. After the war they moved to Durham, NC while Loren was attending Duke University. Following Loren’s graduation from Duke in 1949 they moved to Lafayette, Tenn. They had the last two of their four children, built their dream house by themselves and raised their family. Subsequent years found them living in Glasgow, Ky, High Point, NC, Carolina Beach, NC, Charlotte, NC, Cornelius, NC and following Loren’s death, Ruth moved to Mt. Gilead, NC where she resided for the remainder of her life. Through the years, the 5 sisters called and visited each other often. They were as close as any sisters could be and enjoyed each other’s company, and their families immensely. Three of the sisters are gone now and are still missed greatly by their sisters and the entire extended family. Ruth was a devoted member of the Church of Christ for over 60 years. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. She always had a smile and a kind word for everybody and always put everybody else’s comfort, needs and feelings first. She always loved dogs, her constant companions through her later years, especially her beloved dogs, Andy, Charlie, Muffy and Annie. She loved God and her Savior, Jesus Christ with all her heart and always looked forward to spending eternity with him. The family will meet at her home.
