Ruth Winn

August 28, 1946 — October 29, 2013

Ruth Williams Winn, 67, of Midland and long-time resident of Charlotte went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Winn was born August 28, 1946 in Charlotte, the youngest of three daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman F. “Jimmy” Williams and Vera B. Williams Kimrey, and step-father, Dewey V. Kimrey. Mrs. Winn graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and Wingate University and then worked for Duke Power before taking time away to raise two daughters. She later worked for Wilson Grove Baptist Church, the office of Fred Calcagni, and eventually retired from Wachovia after more than 10 years of service. Mrs. Winn was a talented pianist and could read sheet music or play by ear. She taught her daughters and a special neighbor, Emily Bell, to play the piano. Over the years, she not only served as accompanist for various children and youth choirs, she was the choir director as well. Even until her last days, Ruth enjoyed praising God by filling her house with beautiful melodies as she played hymns on a daily basis. Mrs. Winn had a passion for serving Jesus by volunteering her time and talents to friends, family, and her church. She served on various church committees, the Town of Midland Planning and Zoning Commission, and the North Carolina Long Term Care Ombudsman Program for Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County. She was a long-time Sunday-School teacher for various age groups at Wilson Grove Baptist Church in Mint Hill, First Baptist Church in Charlotte, and Hopewell Baptist Church in Monroe. Mrs. Winn especially enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was an excellent seamstress, filling her closet with tailor made clothes. She also filled the closets of her daughters when they were children. She enjoyed cooking for her family and was quick to prepare a meal for friends and church members in need. She enjoyed trying new recipes on her family and eventually compiled a Williams Family Cookbook which became a favorite of many. She had numerous requests for more of her recipes so she began compiling additional favorites with plans to share in the future. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Ruth is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, David Winn of Midland; daughter, Tammy Winn Musgrove and husband Kyle of Vienna, Virginia; daughter, Sherry Winn Kapelar and husband John of Midland; two grandchildren, Patrick and Rebecca Musgrove; sister, Martha Newell and husband Carl of Loganville, Georgia; sister, Sarah Mauney and husband Vance of Denver; special cousin, Margie Roberts of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2013 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Hopewell Baptist Church, 420 Hopewell Church Road, Monroe, officiated by Rev. Lee Pig. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church Building Fund, 420 Hopewell Church Road, Monroe, NC 28110.
