It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steven Lamont Leath, who departed this life on February 25, 2025, in Albemarle, North Carolina, at the age of 79.
Steven was born on May 13, 1945-Mother’s Day-in Harlem, New York, to Charles and Flora Leath. He grew up in the Lincoln Projects of Harlem and was the third-born of his siblings-Robert Leath, Richard Leath, and David Leath-all of whom preceded him in death. He pursued higher education at Fordham University, where he earned his associate degree.
After college, Steven became a serial entrepreneur, owning a refrigeration store and a travel agency, and also working for New York Transit. His ambition and work ethic were unmatched, and he always sought new opportunities to create and build. In 1990, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, seeking a quieter and more peaceful life. There, he discovered a passion for photography, capturing moments that reflected his keen eye for beauty and detail.
A man of many passions, Steven loved to travel, listen to music, and immerse himself in kung fu movies. One thing about him-he was always going to have "that walk" and a gold chain, and he never hesitated to remind you he was from New York. Even as he got older, he never lost his sense of fashion or humor, and his blunt honesty always made for a good laugh.
In 1986, Steven married Carol Leath, and together they built a life full of love and cherished memories for 39 wonderful years. He was a devoted father to his seven sons-Lamont Leath, David Leath, Kevin Leath, Terrance Kemp, Michael Leath, Shawn Leath, and Christopher Leath-and his four daughters-Melissa Leath, Cherice Leach, Nikki Murphy, and Chekiera Leath. He was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and was blessed with a large and loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish his memory and legacy.
Steven’s presence, wisdom, and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of love, strength, and resilience will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 7, at 1:00 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle, NC, officiated by Apostle Dr. Dana Williams and Pastor Darius Williams. A reception will follow in the Oak Room.
May he rest in peace.
