On Saturday, February 15, 2025, Susan Harrington, a reserved 55 year old, of Concord passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, and while holding her twin brother’s hand at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (Atrium Health Cabarrus).
Susan was born on November 20, 1969, to the late Jewell Furr Harrington, a former Nurse Manager at Cabarrus Memorial. According to Jewell, in the wee morning hours, Susan and her brother came into the world in the same hospital during a rare earthquake in Concord. While her brother wailed, Susan calmly took in her new, somewhat tremulous beginning, looked at her brother and then at her mom and smiled.
Susan graduated from Concord High School in 1988 – Go Spiders! – where she was active in band and several clubs. In 1993, she graduated from North Carolina State University – Go Wolfpack! – with a BS in Animal Science. For several years, Susan worked in the field of animal husbandry and as a North Carolina food inspector. Then, she decided to totally change gears. After completing requisite education credits at Pfeiffer University – Go Falcons! – she began her career as a middle school science teacher with Cabarrus County Schools. For more than two decades, Susan shaped young minds at Mount Pleasant Middle School – Go Tigers! The work was challenging but rewarding, and she really loved all her students.
In addition to mom, Susan was preceded in death by her father-like figure, Harry Smith; uncle, Pete Furr; and grandparents, Cliff and Audrey Furr. She is survived by her brother, Mark Harrington; aunts, Betty Rivers, Tennia Auten, and Shirley Furr; and cousins, Becky Crabtree, Randy Furr, Wesley Rivers, Andrew Clark, and David Furr.
In early May 2025, the family will welcome friends and loved ones for a celebration of Susan’s life at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord. This event will be preceded by a small intimate gathering at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord where Susan’s ashes will be interred next to her mother. Details of these events will be forthcoming as May approaches.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Harrington family.
