Susan Rowe

Susan Whitford Rowe, 74, of Concord, NC passed away Saturday, February 1, 2025. Born September 2, 1950, Susan spent her childhood in Durham, NC roaming the Duke University campus where both of her parents worked. She attended St. Andrews College where she studied education. Susan met the love of her life, Nick, on a blind date and loved him for the rest of her life. 

Susan was first, and foremost, a teacher. She loved her students and told them that once they entered her classroom, they became her children. She celebrated their triumphs, lifted them in their defeats, and loved them every step of the way. She could teach anything to anyone and taught many subjects from middle school to high school English and History. She was an avid reader, which led to her love teaching English. She poured her passion for English into her students. 

 Susan went by many names including Mom, Mimi, Mrs. Rowe, S. Rowe, Death Rowe (due to her time as a teacher in the NC Prison System), and one of her favorites, Wilbur (an affectionate moniker given by her students because they didn’t know what the W in her middle name was). She loved Christmas movies, Food Network, and all things Disney. 

Susan is preceded in death by her husband, Col. James Nicholas Rowe, and her parents, William Edward and Lola Southerland Whitford. She is survived by her sons Brian (and Sara), Alex (and Meredith), and Chris (and Maneth). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Noah, Nicholas, Lily, Dorothy, and Megan.

 There will be a memorial service Saturday, February 8th at 11am at Hartsell Funeral Home Concord (460 Branchview Dr. NE, Concord, NC 28025) and a visitation following the service.
