Susan Shoemaker

April 21, 1940 — June 27, 2022

Charlotte

Surrounded by her loved ones, Susan Kay Shoemaker, 82, of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022, from her battle with Alzheimer’s.

Susan “Susie” was born on April 21, 1940, to the late Jack and Eileen Steele in Huntington, Indiana.  She was the eldest of eight children.  Susie graduated from Sam Houston High School and married her high school sweetheart, Elton LaRoy Shoemaker in 1958.  Soon after, they were married and started a family.  They had three children.  Elton’s career moved them from Houston, Texas, through the southeast and ultimately to Charlotte, NC, in 1969.  In 1975, Susie opened her first retail clothing business called Fantacy’s at the Overstreet Mall.  She opened a second location in the Charlotte Douglas airport and was featured in USA Today as a “must visit” attraction in America’s airports.  Following her success with Fantacy’s, she became everyone’s favorite “make-up gal” by opening a Merle Norman at Home Styles Gallery in Mint Hill, NC.  Susie’s love for Jesus poured out onto everyone around her.  Her love and joy radiated to each person she was with and not a day went by when she didn’t put others before herself.

In addition to her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elton Sr., and her son, Elton Jr.

She is survived by her brother, Kelly; sisters, Judy and Becky; two children, Stacy (AJ) Jamil and Jack (Ann) Shoemaker; seven grandchildren, Trey, Jace (Katie), Jenna (Anthony), Amy (Taylor), John (Ali), Adam (Lanie), Olivia; and six great-grandchildren, Andi, Tripp, Skylar, Cameron, Asher, & Cali.

Throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s she was in the loving care of her dear friends; Gina Luckie, Lauren Polk, and Billie Lowry.

Mimi will always be remembered as loving, beautiful, and elegant. She will be greatly missed.

The Celebration of Susie’s Life will be held at Locust Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 2, 2022.  The visitation will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the service at 12:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Ardy Skidmore.  The service will be streamed live through the church's Facebook page.  Susie will be laid to rest with her beloved husband and son at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte.
