Ted Penny Furr, 85 of 603 N. 7th Street, Albemarle, NC passed away on July 18, 2011 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, July 20 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be at 11 AM on Thursday, July 21 at First Baptist Church of Albemarle with Rev. Roger Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Park. Mr. Furr was born in Stanly County on November 3, 1925?, he was preceded in death by his parents Alva Alma “A. A.” and Lona Mae Moss Furr; two brothers, Alma and Bill Furr; one sister, Foy Barrier; and great-grandson, Kaleb Furr. Mr. Furr is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Rudolph Furr, of the home; two sons, Reed Furr and wife Patti, Todd Furr and wife Kelly; and one daughter, Penny Townsend and husband, Bob, all of Albemarle; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. A lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Albemarle, Mr. Furr served as a Deacon and a Trustee and sang in the church choir for nearly 50 years. He served in the US Army 99th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge during WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star. A member of the American Legion and the VFW, he helped organize the local chapter of the DAV. Mr Furr was a charter member of the Albemarle Jaycees and was awarded Stanly County Young Man of the Year in 1951. A member of the Albemarle Optimist Club since 1954, he served as president and was awarded Optimist of the Year. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Oasis Temple Shriners where he was a member of the Oasis Shriners Clown Unit for over 20 years. He was elected to the Albemarle City Schools Board of Education and served for 18 years, holding the position of Vice Chairman for 6 years. His most cherished honor was that of being a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
