It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Barnes, who was healed into
the arms of Jesus on April 1, 2023. Born on March 25, 1951, in Gastonia, NC, Tom was a loving
and devoted father, grandfather, friend, and Christ follower.
Tom dedicated his life to serving and protecting his community as a police officer in Charlotte for
30 years. In his many years of service, he touched the lives of countless individuals. He worked in
Vice and Narcotics for a number of years and ended his career as a Major over Felony
Investigations.
A man of many interests and talents, Tom loved playing golf, anything adventurous, and working
with his hands. He found great joy in using his skills to build, fix, and help others in need. Some
of his greatest times were working with his church on mission trips to Lynch, KY. He had such a
heart for people and loved getting to use his skills to help where needed. Of all the things that
brought him happiness, nothing compared to the time spent with his grandkids,
especially during their many beach trips.
Tom was a Christ follower throughout his life, his faith and devotion evident in the way he lived
and treated others. He was a role model to many, and his guiding presence will be deeply
missed. He loves his church family at Sardis Baptist Church and treasures the people there. He
was truly loved by all that knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Barnes of almost 54 years; son and daughter in law,
Daniel and Jenny Barnes; daughter and son in law, Janice and Brandon Williams; brother, Eddie Barnes;
and 4 grandchildren, Landon, Mckenna, Aubrey Grace, and Bryce. They knew their grandpa loved them and they will carry on his legacy and the invaluable lessons he taught them.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Franklin Barnes and Frances Janice Barnes; as well as
his sister, Alda Barnes Bean.
