Velma Williams Harwood, 86, of Barrier Store Road in Locust, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 29, 2013. Mrs. Harwood was the daughter of the late Daniel Alexander Williams and the late Rebecca Isabel Green Williams of Charlotte. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin David Harwood. Mrs. Harwood was a devoted Christian and a member of Mission Baptist Church in Locust. She was a homemaker in the Mission community. After a lifetime of crop and livestock farming, the Harwoods grew and sold flowers and vegetables at the Stanly County Farmer’s Market in their later years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. Funeral services and interment for the late Mrs. Harwood will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Mission Baptist Church in Locust, with the Rev. Ronnie Russell officiating. At other times, the family will meet at the home of her son, Gary. Mrs. Harwood is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Harwood and Dottie Almen-Harwood of La Crosse, Wis., and Gary Harwood and Donna Watkins Harwood of Mount Pleasant; six grandchildren, Hannah Harwood of Wellesley, Mass., Jordan Harwood of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Theodore Harwood of Ithaca, N.Y., Elspeth Harwood of Springfield, Mo., and Jenny and Teresa Harwood of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Grace Stegall of Indian Trail; and three brothers, Frank Williams of Mint Hill, Brad Williams of Charlotte, and Olin Williams of Huntersville. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Harwood’s exceptional caregivers during her prolonged bout with Alzheimer’s disease; Doris Connell, Patty Griffin, Addison Griffin, Savanna Connell, Jerrika Linker, Karen Kiser, Alicia Love, Shanda Purser, Tami Carr, Cheryl Hinson, Dixie Shires, Carolyn Herrin, and her grandchildren, Jenny, Teresa, and Hannah Harwood. Memorials may be sent to the Pregnancy Resource Center of Stanly County, 731 West Main Street, in Albemarle, NC 28001. Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland is serving the Harwood family.
