Velma Simpson

Lottie Velma Mullis Simpson, 104 years of age, of Concord, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014 at her home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and those who loved her.

Velma was born February 11, 1910 in Union County to the late James Marcus Mullis and the late Cora Hamilton Mullis. She was the last surviving grandchild of Sherwood Mullis (1837) and last surviving of her nine siblings. She was also preceded in death by beloved husband of 62 years, Elder Elijah Hoyle Simpson; daughter, Betty Lee Simpson; and grandson, John Gregory Parker.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. The funeral service will be on Sunday at 3:00 pm at Crooked Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 7920 Crooked Creek Rd., Monroe officiated by Elder Charles Smith and Elder Gary Lowe. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include daughters, Elladean Simpson Blackwelder, Lottie Mae Simpson York, and Rachel Ann Simpson Parker and husband John, all of Concord; son, Hoyle Mitchel Simpson and wife Charlotte of Concord; grandchildren, Rebecca Sherrill, Sheila Smith, John Glen Blackwelder, Lottie Teresa York Troutman, Ronda Sue York, James Kenneth York, Jr.; step-grandson, Stephen Gabbard; eight great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Velma was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved her flowers and farming, and enjoyed tending to her chickens and cattle. Velma was devoted to her church and church family. She loved gospel singing.
