Verne Smith

Verne Lee Smith, 92 of 10223 Guy Verne Road, Oakboro, passed away on August 18, 2011 at The Oaks Nursing Center, Harrisburg, NC. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Saturday, August 20, 2011 from 6pm until 8pm. At other times, the family will meet at the home of his son, Roy Smith, 9522 Richard Sandy Road, Oakboro. The funeral will be in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, August 21 at 4pm, officiated by Rev. Charlie Littlejohn. Burial will follow in the Oakboro Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in Stanly County on September 3, 1918, to the late Richard Smith and the late Jenny Curlee Smith. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Milie Barbee Smith; his son, Vernon Garry Smith; and 3 brothers, Crowell, James and Melton Smith. He is survived by his son, Roy Smith and his wife Carolyn of Oakboro; two grandchildren, Karla Leigh Ennis and husband Lee of Locust and Chad Lee Smith and wife Ellie of Oakboro; 5 great-grandchildren ; daughter in law, Frances Crisco Smith; sister in law, Amelia Smith; and special friend, Edith Little of Oakboro. Mr. Smith was a past employee of Cannon Mills. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 617 Bethel Church Road, Locust, NC 28097.
