Virgene committed her life to the Lord at a very early age at Christian Tabernacle in Dayton, OH where she eventually met and married her husband, Mason. She enjoyed serving her Lord and Savior all her life. She was an ordained minister for 68 years. She served alongside her husband faithfully as a pastor here in America for five years; as a missionary to Papua New Guinea for twenty-three years; the Philippines for two and a half years; Singapore and Southeast Asia for twelve years. Upon retiring, she served in the Seniors Ministry at New Hope Worship Center leading songs, doing hospital and home visitations, calling and writing notes and cards to all who were ill or hospitalized, and faithfully praying for all.

Virgene was known for her beautiful smile, her fervent prayers, her "go get 'em, you can do it" tenacious spirit, her thoughtfulness of others, her giving generous heart, her love and dedication to her one and only true love, Mason, and her love for her children and grandchildren. She was "Momma Hughes" and "Grandma Hughes" to many around the world.
