Wayne “Scottie” Bennett, 79, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2025, at his 51-year residence in Mint Hill, NC.
Scottie was born in Green Mountain, NC to the late Sam Bennett, Jr "Junior" and Catherine Peterson Bennett. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betsy" Dunn Bennett, as well as his brothers Clyde and Michael Bennett.
Scottie worked as a carpenter and business owner. He started his career refurbishing burned-out structures, progressing to building log homes, and then more intricate, detailed carpentry on larger homes. He was blessed to help the church ministry build much-needed churches for island people.
He enjoyed restoring old cars and going to car shows. Scottie loved the park across the road (Veteran’s Memorial of Mint Hill) where he walked 8-10 miles a day, collected frisbees and tennis balls, and chatted with workers and friends. He'd have friends over in his ‘smoking garage’ to discuss life and politics. More than anything, Scottie loved the Lord, and he loved his Betsy. Since the day she left this earth, he’d been trying to be by her side again. Fourteen hours late for their 33rd anniversary, he will have told her he just had to see the Daytona 500 flag drop one more time on a perfect Carolina blue sky day.
Survivors include his son, Kevin Bennett of Myrtle Beach, SC, Angie Bennett-Eudy (Eddie) of Charlotte, NC, and daughter Ashley Morton (Joshua) of Charlotte, NC. Also, step-daughter Amy Moya-Mendez Swaney of Charlotte, NC, and George Moya-Mendez (Kristy) of Rock Hill, SC. Scottie and Betsy shared thirteen grandchildren: Alex Eudy, Victoria Bennett, Hart and Cole Swaney, Kobi, Jase, Phoenix, and Cecelia Moya-Mendez, Eli, Lexi, Luci, Lucas, and Caroline Morton. He is also survived by his beloved brothers, Edwin and David Bennett.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Living Faith Baptist Church, 8600 Hood Rd., Charlotte. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd., Mint Hill.
