Wayne Charlesworth Jones, 75, passed away from complications of cancer Monday, November 18, 2013 in Charlotte, NC. He was born on October 6, 1938 in Honolulu, HI to Harry S and Minnie C Jones. Wayne attended Belmont Abbey, Charlotte College and UNC Charlotte. He was married to Marilyn Jones for forty eight years. Above all, Wayne was a perfectionist and a problem solver. He could fix anything and even built the addition on his own house. A true jack of all trades, his career took many twists and turns along the way. For a man who began in physics and engineering, he was a real people person. He worked for 15 years as a social worker for the City of Charlotte. He marched in the 108th Army Band as a trumpeter and passed on his love of music to his two daughters who also played in college bands where he was a supportive parent and booster. Wayne was a phenomenal landscaper who had an enviable yard and people often stopped to admire his handiwork and give a friendly hello. For the past 20 or so years, he enjoyed the company of his cardiac rehab "lunch bunch" friends where he regaled them with stories from near and far and gave them tips on how to fix all of their appliances, large and small. When he wasn't working in his own business as an automotive technician or around his home, he was also a wonderful community member who took in many colorful stray animals and people. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn and his daughters, Jenny (Travis Goodwin) and Sally (Josh Greene) and grandchildren Henry Greene, John Paul Goodwin and Jamie Goodwin and his nieces Alexandra, Andrea, and Anastacia Atkins and nephew Brian Ingram. He was predeceased by his sister Janet Atkins. In lieu of flowers, kindly send your donations to the Charlotte humane society or to the UNC Charlotte marching band fund. A private family ceremony will take place honoring his life. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Jones family.
