William Crowell Bowers, 90 years of age, of Norwood, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center in Albemarle.
Bill was born February 15, 1926 in Stanly County to the late Claude Houston Bowers and the late Ellen Katherine Bowers. He was also preceded in death by his great-grandchild, Ellison Ann Burton; and brothers, Robert Lee Bowers and Claude Houston Bowers, Jr..
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The graveside service, officiated by Rev. Kinney Wallace and Rev. Otis Goins, will be at 11:00am on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Norview Gardens, 949 Pee Dee Ave, Norwood. Military honors will be conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter #12. At other times, the family will be gathering at the home.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Olee Poplin Bowers of the home; sons, Kevin Bowers and wife Pat of Norwood, Rick Bowers and wife Rita of Richmond, VA; sisters, Mildred Russell of Albemarle, Carolyn Russell of Albemarle; grandchildren, Ty Bowers and wife Liz of Richmond, VA, Casey Burton and husband Doug of Richmond, VA, Brandi Bowers and Cody Bowers, both of Norwood; great-granddaughters, Natalie Bowers and Kinsley Burton; and sister-in-law, Merle Bowers of Norwood.
Bill honorably served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He retired as a district veterans service officer from the North Carolina Department of Veterans Administration. Bill truly enjoyed being the manager for 30 years with the development and expansion of the Stanly County Agricultural Fair. He was a member of the Stanly County Shriners, DAV, and the American Legion for over 50 years. Bill also loved traveling and mowing his yard on his John Deere.
