William Carey Odom, 78, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, with his family by his side.
William, or Carey as most people knew him, was born April 1, 1943 in Saint Pauls, North Carolina. He is the son of the late Hoyt and Opal Odom, one of six children. He was preceded in death by his son, Carey Odom Jr., and stepson, Ricky Parker.
He is survived by his wife of fifty two years, Margaret Ann Odom; son, Garon Odom; daughter, Mandi Massey and her husband Michael; grandchildren, Nora Blake Massey, Joda Carey Massey and Carlin Odom; brother, Ralph and his wife Becky.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He retired from the City of Charlotte after thirty four years of service and was able to enjoy many years of retirement, spending quality time with family and friends. He always put the needs of others before his own and has been an active member of the Hickory Grove Lions Club, serving his community and advocating for the blind, since 1984. He loved playing the role of part-time mechanic with his brother-in-law, Harry Harrell. They also loved to go to bluegrass shows together. He loved his Coca-Cola, never Pepsi, and pretty much lived on Reese’s Fast Breaks. He loved Layton, his dog, so much. Wherever he went, Layton followed.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Hartsell Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hickory Grove Lions Club or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
