Willie Forest Monday, 90, of Locust, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home Concord on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 1 until 2 pm. Funeral services will follow in the chapel at 2 pm, with Rev. Bill Greenwood officiating and Rev. Rody Carland of Providence Baptist Church in Harrisburg, NC will assist with the services. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Mr. Monday was born on June 18, 1922 in Person County, NC to the late Raymond C. Monday and Pearl Howard Monday. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Harrisburg, NC. Mr. Monday was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He enlisted June 28, 1940. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant July 15, 1943. He completed flight training and was rated a Liaison Pilot October 22, 1943. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater with the 24th Infantry Division as an air observation pilot. He participated in many combat missions in New Guinea and the Philippines including the landing at Leyte in the Philippines on October 20, 1944. He was separated from service with the rank of Captain January 12, 1946. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action and the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights. He also received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, The World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He also served a tour of duty in the Army from November 1948 to August 1949. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Partin Monday; daughters, Denise Monday Hill and husband, James Lee Hill (Jimmy) of Fort Mill, SC, and Diane Monday and husband, James Lee Fennell, III (Jim) of Gambrills, MD; brother, John B. Monday of Ellenboro, NC; 5 grandchildren, Leslie Hill Liles and husband Jason Liles, Lydia Hill Barbee and husband Justin Barbee, Laurie Monday Timberlake and husband, Edward Lee Timberlake, Jr., Devlyn Rose Fennell, and Ian James Fennell; 5 great-grandchildren, Otto, Eli, Milo and Max Timberlake and Samantha Paige Barbee. In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to Tucker Hospice House Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County 5003 Hospice Lane Kannapolis, NC 28081.
