Wilson Barbee

Wilson James Barbee, 72, of Locust, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at his home. Mr. Barbee was born December 19, 1937, in Stanly County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Atlas and Bessie Barbee; and brothers, Aaron and Dwayne Barbee. He served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps. He was active in the local community as a realtor, a founding member and Elder of Carolina Presbyterian Church and a choir member, a member of the Locust Rescue Squad and Fire Department, a member of the Jaycees, Past District Governor of the Lions Club as well as many other offices, original organizational founder of Locust, a member of the Town Council since August of 1973, Founder of the Locust Christmas Parade, served on the first City Council prior to serving as mayor, mayor of Locust from 1995 – 2003, and a current city council member. He was instrumental in bringing the first doctor and dentist to Locust, and a current member of Stanly County Board of Equalization and Review and Re-evaluation Advisory Board. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a dedicated servant to his family, church, and community. A visitation will be 5 – 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. At other times, the family will meet at his home. The funeral service will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m., with a 30 minute state, at Carolina Presbyterian Church, Locust, officiated by Mr. James Almond. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Gail Burleson Barbee, of the home; daughters, Alice Frawley and husband, Larry, of Strongsville, Ohio, Teresa Almond, and husband, Rick, of Locust, and Debra Fisher and husband, Rob, of Asheville; 11 grandchildren; and sister, Juanita Carpenter and husband, Jerry. Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Center Fund, P. O. Box 190, Locust, NC 28097. Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland, is serving the Barbee family.
