Woodrow Wilson Benfield, age 90, of Concord, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2014.
Mr. Benfield was born February 11, 1924 in Concord, NC to the late Everette G. and Margaret K. Benfield. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy W. Benfield.
Woody proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a self-made man who valued faith, family, and honor, above all else. His direct approach, feistiness, incredible sense of humor, and love of card games will always be remembered. Woody started his career as a barber, and shortly thereafter became a driver for Akers Motor Lines, completing over 25 years safe driving. After retirement from trucking Woody served as a security officer at Phillip Morris USA.
Survivors include his children, Pam Pless, Mike Benfield, and Bennie Levingston and husband, Carl, of Concord; and Anita Paris and husband, Mark, of Charlotte. Grandchildren include Frankie and Bill Pless; Rodney and Josh Green, Jessica Ival-Green, Patrick Levingston, and Melissa Jenkins; and Jennings and Emily Paris. There are also 11 great grandchildren who adored him. Woody’s surviving siblings include Maxine (Sis) Phillips, and Bob and Joe Benfield. He was preceded in death by siblings Everette Benfield Jr, Stella Myers, Zana Gabriel, Glenn Benfield, and Teresa (Dink) Harrison.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8pm at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord, Monday, Sept 8. A Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be offered at 11am on Tuesday, Sept 9 at St. James Catholic Church, 139 Manor Ave. SW, in Concord.
