Wylie Hoyle Newton, 83 years of age, of Concord, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, after fighting health complications due to Agent Orange for 12 years.

Wylie was born October 19, 1932 in Concord, North Carolina to the late Hoyle Vernell and Lillian Irene Wylie Newton.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter Donna Styers and his grandson Jonah Gray.

He was a graduate of Concord High School in 1951. He was a member of the National Guard during high school and enlisted in the US Army in the summer of 1951. He was one of the first fifty Special Forces organized by President John Kennedy. He served in Germany, Korea and six tours in Southeast Asia. He returned to the United States and served with the Atlantic Joint Alliance. His last assignment with the military, was Gettysburg College, teaching ROTC. He retired with the rank of Sergeant Major, with four Purple Hearts, Silver Star and Bronze Stars among the many medals and citations.

He completed his education, earning a BS Degree from Campbell University and a Masters and Advance Degrees from UNC-Charlotte while teaching school at West Charlotte High School.

He was a member of a Boy Scout Troop when his father was a Scout Master. He worked with Scouts all of his life as a Scout Master in Concord, NC, Emmitsburg, MD and Buies Creek, NC, earning the Silver Beaver Award.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kay Love Newton, sons Wylie Hoyle Newton, Jr., Phillip R. Gray and wife Donna Tarlton Gray, Bruce Morrison Gray, daughter Kelly Newton, sister Tully Newton, brother William Lawson Newton. Grandchildren, Elizabeth Gray, Adrian Griffin, Audra G. Connolly, Amanda G. Morgan and Eddie Morgan, Jennifer Cassell and Robert Cassell, Jeremy Hagee, Mandy Hagee, great grandchildren, Hannah Gray, Olivia Graves, Logan and Liam Cerdas-Gray, Dylan Morgan, Sam Morgan, James Lomax II, Maddie Griffin, Kolby Gray. Special niece Billinda Newton and nephew William Perry III, two special sister-in-laws, Delette Bost and Betsy Love.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm, Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Randy Wall and Rev. Merrill Perkins. Burial with full military honors, will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.
